Florida homeowners may be able to recover part of the sales tax paid on qualifying impact-resistant windows and exterior doors. The Florida 2026 home hardening sales tax refund is not deducted automatically. Homeowners pay the tax, complete installation on an eligible property, and apply to the Florida Department of Revenue.
Understanding the dates, property rules, product standards, required documents, and filing deadline before starting a home-hardening project can help prevent avoidable problems.
What Is the Florida 2026 Home Hardening Sales Tax Refund?
Florida law provides the benefit solely as a refund of previously paid Florida sales tax, including applicable discretionary sales surtax. Unlike a traditional point-of-sale sales tax holiday, the retailer generally collects tax when the products are purchased, and the homeowner later files a refund claim.
Qualifying retail purchases must be made from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. Refund claims must be submitted by September 30, 2029, and the refund cannot exceed $500 for one eligible residential property. The Florida Senate’s bill summary also identifies the three-year purchase period.
Who Is Eligible?
The applicant must be the legal owner of the property where the home-hardening products were installed. The property must:
- Contain a site-built dwelling constructed at its permanent location
- Have a Florida homestead exemption
- Have a just value of $700,000 or less
- Be the only eligible residential property claimed by the owner
Mobile homes, manufactured homes, trailers, and similarly titled or registered dwellings are excluded from the site-built dwelling definition.
Before purchasing products, homeowners should verify their parcel number, homestead exemption, and just value through their county property appraiser. When a condominium or another property type creates uncertainty, contact the Florida Department of Revenue for an individual eligibility determination.
What Products May Qualify?
The official definition covers:
- Impact-resistant windows
- Impact-resistant exterior doors
- Impact-resistant garage doors
Products must be designed and rated for impact resistance and wind pressure under specified testing standards. Form DR-26HH identifies ASTM E1886 and E1996, AAMA 506, Florida Building Code TAS 201, TAS 202, and TAS 203. ANSI/DASMA 115 may also apply to qualifying garage doors.
A qualifying glazing or door system may include its frame and attachment hardware when purchased in the same sale for compliant installation.
Do not assume standard windows, ordinary doors, decorative products, labor, permit fees, shutters, screens, or unrelated materials qualify. The products must also be installed on the eligible residential property before the refund is claimed.
How Much Can a Homeowner Receive?
The refund is based on qualifying Florida sales tax and discretionary sales surtax actually paid, up to a maximum of $500. Spending more on the project does not increase the refund beyond this limit.
Illustration only: If the qualifying tax paid is $420, the potential refund may be $420. If the qualifying tax paid is $650, the refund cannot exceed $500. Actual approval depends on the Florida Department of Revenue’s review.

Home Hardening Refund Versus My Safe Florida Home
The Florida home hardening sales tax refund and the My Safe Florida Home Program are separate programs.
My Safe Florida Home has its own application, inspection, eligibility, funding, and grant procedures. Homeowners should not assume that qualifying for one program means they will qualify for the other. Review the latest official requirements before combining incentives or beginning construction.
Why Impact Windows and Entry Doors Matter in Fort Myers
Impact-resistant windows and exterior doors are designed to resist wind pressure and wind-borne debris. They may help strengthen vulnerable exterior openings without making a home hurricane-proof.
Permanent impact protection can also reduce the need to install separate storm panels before a hurricane. Depending on the selected product and its tested ratings, homeowners may also consider security features, acoustic performance, and energy-efficiency ratings when comparing options.
No product can guarantee insurance discounts, lower energy bills, claim approval, complete storm-damage prevention, or protection from every hurricane condition.
